Lake Activities:Lake Pend Oreille offers a new sort of splendor come fall. The lake typically attracts swimmers and waterskiers until well into September. As the days cool and the crisp weather arrives, mountains surrounding the lake go golden with the turning colors of birch and tamarack trees. Hikes and walks on lakeshore trails are popular, and cruises on the lake offer terrific scenery. Golf:About 50 minutes south and west of Sandpoint is StoneRidge Golf and Recreational Community, with an 18-hole championship-level golf course with challenges for all levels of gofers. Priest Lake Golf is a beautiful 18-hole golf course offering over 6,500-yards of challenging golf on a course nestled among the lush foests and wetlands so characteristic of the Priest Lake Region. Many line First Avenue, which is home to the newly remodeled Cedar Street Bridge and the new location of the downtown Coldwater Creek store with a wine bar attached upstairs. Two miles north of Sandpoint off Highway 95 is the Bonner Mall including a movie theatre, restaurants, and shops. Call (208) 267-0947 to learn more. Hiking and camping Early fall is possibly the finest season for hikers in the high country of the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains surrounding Sandpoint. There are well more than 100 maintained trails within a couple hours drive of Sandpoint, ranging from easy strolls to waterfalls and panoramas to multi-day backpacking trips through spectacular back country landscapes where you may spot rare wildlife. There are also more than two dozen fine state and federal campgrounds. Check the campground guide. Schweitzer Mountain Resort, 11 miles from Sandpoint, typically opens for skiing and snowboarding on Thanksgiving weekend, or earlier or later as snow conditions permit.
