Summer Activities



Ahh, summer in Sandpoint. Our typical summer brings warm, sunny days with ample opportunity to sample the waters of 43-mile-long Lake Pend Oreille, the high alpine country of the Selkirk and Cabinet mountain ranges, and the unique shops, galleries, dining and many activities in our bustling downtown.

Lake Activities:

Lake Pend Oreille offers a tremendous variety of watersports, from swimming -- with water temperatures warming nicely to the 70s as summer progresses -- to water skiing and boating, fishing for the huge Kamloops and mackinaw trout or the peaceful sport of kayaking. Right downtown, don't miss the Sandpoint City Beach, a splendid park with sandy beaches and a paved srolling path at water's edge. Pend Oreille House Boat Rentals, on beautiful Lake Pend Oreille. House boats available May through October and sleep 6, 8 and 10 people. Rates available for weekends, mid-week and weekly. 208-263-2675

Golf:

About 50 minutes south and west of Sandpoint is StoneRidge Golf and Recreational Community, with an 18-hole championship-level golf course with challenges for all levels of gofers. Shopping:

Downtown Sandpoint abounds with retail and unusual shopping opportunities. Many line First Avenue, which is home to the the newly remodeled Cedar Street Bridge and the new location of the Coldwater Creek retail store with a wine bar up the stairs. Visitors will find sourvenir items and gifts to take home as well at Bearweare Graphics and Pend d'Oreille Winery.

Two miles north of Sandpoint off Highway 95 is the Bonner Mall including a movie theatre, restaurants, and shops. Also, don't miss shopping in the village at Schweitzer Mountain Resort located 11 miles from Sandpoint.

Other Activities:

True North Expeditions is a team of local outdoor enthusiasts who can customize multiple outdoor adventures. SUV tours, hiking, biking, and photo expeditions are a few of their many specialities. Hiking and camping. Summer is the high season for hikers in the high country of the Selkirk and Cabinet mountains surrounding Sandpoint. There are well more than 100 maintained trails within a couple hours drive of Sandpoint, ranging from easy strolls to waterfalls and panoramas to multi-day backpacking trips through spectacular backcountry landscapes where you may spot rare wildlife. Schweitzer Mountain Resort, 11 miles from Sandpoint, runs chairlift rides during summer, offering easy access to the resort's peaks for hikers and mountain bikers and magnificent views of Lake Pend Oreille and surrounding mountains. 208-263-9555. www.schweitzer.com
